Wiki Loves Monuments Cyprus 2024 formed part of the world’s largest photography competition dedicated to documenting cultural heritage through open knowledge. The national campaign invited the public to photograph monuments across Cyprus and upload their images to Wikimedia Commons under free licenses, contributing to the preservation and global visibility of the island’s cultural heritage.
Organised by the Wikimedia Community User Group Cyprus, the campaign highlighted the importance of photography as a tool for documenting, sharing, and safeguarding cultural memory, while supporting open, reusable cultural content for educational and cultural use worldwide. As part of the campaign activities, a cross-community photo walk was organised in Nicosia, with participants photographing monuments from both sides of the city and later meeting at the Home for Cooperation, reinforcing the campaign’s emphasis on collaboration, accessibility, and shared heritage.
The 2024 campaign concluded with an Awards Ceremony, recognising selected photographic contributions that documented cultural heritage across the island. The ceremony brought together contributors and members of the Wikimedia community to celebrate participation and collective effort in making Cyprus’s monuments freely accessible through Wikimedia Commons.
